This question has 2 versions. This lesson is version 2, where you must decide which side is stronger. For version 1, which only asks for the advantages and disadvantages, watch the companion lesson on the same gap-year topic: IELTS Writing Task 2 – Advantages and Disadvantages Essay →

Key points

1
'Outweigh' means 'are bigger or more important'. This version asks you to decide which side is stronger, and to keep that opinion all the way through.
2
Plan, then weigh. Write plus and minus ideas, choose two from each side, then ask: which effects are bigger, and which last longer? There's no right answer; pick the side you can explain best.
3
Four paragraphs. Introduction (paraphrase + your opinion) → Body 1: the weaker side → Body 2: the stronger side, and why it wins → Conclusion that repeats your opinion with no new ideas.
4
Stronger side last, and longest. About 50 words for the introduction, 90 for body paragraph 1, 120 for body paragraph 2 and 40 for the conclusion. The essay builds up to your opinion.
5
Admit, then turn it around. Start the weaker side with 'Admittedly', then use 'However' to show the problems are smaller than they look.
6
Compare the two sides directly. Say why one side wins, for example short-term problems against long-term benefits.
7
Three common mistakes. No clear opinion; changing your opinion between the introduction and the conclusion; not explaining why one side is stronger.
The example question from the video

These days, many young people take a gap year, a year of travel or work, between finishing school and starting university. Do the advantages of taking a gap year outweigh the disadvantages? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.

Band 9 model answer from the video (318 words)

Nowadays, it is increasingly common for school leavers to spend a year travelling or working before they begin their university studies. Although this can be expensive and may break the habit of studying, I believe that the benefits clearly outweigh the drawbacks, as a gap year helps young people to mature and choose the right course.

Admittedly, taking a gap year has some disadvantages. Firstly, it can be very expensive, since flights, accommodation and travel insurance cost a great deal. Secondly, after twelve months without lessons or exams, some young people find it difficult to return to studying, and a few never go to university at all. However, both problems can usually be managed. Students who work for part of the year can pay for their own travel, and many keep their minds active by taking an online course or learning a language. As a result, these drawbacks are real, but they are usually small and short-term.

Nevertheless, the advantages of a gap year are far more significant. The main benefit is that it gives young people time to grow up. Living away from home teaches them to manage money, solve problems and deal with new people, so they often arrive at university more confident and independent. More importantly, a year away from the classroom helps students decide what they really want to study. For example, someone who plans to study medicine might volunteer in a hospital and realise that the job is not right for them. This could save them from wasting several years and a large amount of money on the wrong degree. Unlike the costs, which are short-term, these benefits can last for a whole career.

In conclusion, although a gap year can be costly and may interrupt students' learning, I believe that its advantages outweigh its disadvantages. This is because the maturity and clear direction it brings last much longer than its short-term problems.

In recent years, a large number of consumers have started to do most of their shopping on the internet rather than in nearby stores. Although this trend may harm local businesses and lead to more packaging waste, I believe that its benefits outweigh its drawbacks, because online shopping saves people time and money.

Admittedly, buying goods online has some disadvantages. Firstly, when people stop visiting local shops, many small businesses lose customers and have to close, which can make town centres feel empty. Secondly, every online order is delivered in boxes and plastic, so it creates a great deal of waste. However, these problems can be reduced. Many small shops now sell their products online as well, and some delivery companies already use recyclable packaging. As a result, these drawbacks are real, but they can be managed.

Nevertheless, the advantages of online shopping are far more significant. The main benefit is convenience. Shoppers can order almost anything at any time of day without travelling or queuing, which is especially helpful for busy parents, elderly people and anyone who lives far from a city. More importantly, the internet allows people to compare prices from many sellers in a few minutes. For example, someone who wants to buy a new laptop can check several websites and choose the cheapest offer, instead of visiting three or four shops. Over a year, this can save a family a considerable amount of money. Unlike the problems, which businesses and governments can solve, these benefits make daily life easier for almost everyone.

In conclusion, although online shopping can hurt local shops and create waste, I believe that its advantages outweigh its disadvantages. This is because the time and money it saves matter more to most people than its problems, which can be reduced.
