Writing Task 2Opinion (two options)

IELTS Writing Task 2 - Opinion Essay: Choose Between Two Options (Renting vs Buying)

Some IELTS opinion questions give you two options and ask which one you think is better. Pick one option, support it with two reasons, mention the other option briefly, and keep the same choice from start to end.

Key points

1
Find the two options. Underline both options in the question (here: renting and buying). You must choose one of them.
2
Choose one option clearly. Say which option is better in the introduction. Do not write that both options are good.
3
Two reasons, one body paragraph each. Give one strong reason in each body paragraph. Use four steps: point, explain, example, result.
4
Mention the other option briefly. Use although or even though to show you know the other option has a good point.
5
Same choice at the end. The conclusion repeats the same choice and the two reasons, with no new ideas.
6
Three common mistakes. No clear choice; changing your choice; a weak reason with no example or result.
The example question from the video

Some people prefer to rent the home they live in, while others try to buy their own. Which is better for most people: renting or buying a home? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.

Band 9 model answer from the video (265 words)

Some people choose to pay rent for the place where they live, while others work and save in order to purchase a property. In my opinion, renting is better for most people, because it is more flexible and cheaper to start, even though buying can offer long-term security.

To begin with, renting gives people the freedom to move whenever their lives change. Jobs, studies and families often take people to new cities, and a rental contract can usually be ended with one or two months of notice. An owner, on the other hand, must first sell the property, which can take many months and cost a lot in fees. For example, an engineer who is offered a better job in another city can move within weeks if she rents. As a result, renters can follow the best opportunities, which often helps them to earn more.

Furthermore, renting is much cheaper at the start and carries fewer risks. Buying a home requires a large deposit, and the owner is also responsible for every repair, from a broken heater to a leaking roof. For instance, a family that has spent all its savings on a deposit may have no money left when the heater suddenly stops working. Without these costs, renters can use their savings for other goals, such as education or starting a business.

In conclusion, I believe that renting is better for most people, because it gives them the freedom to move and avoids large costs. Although buying can offer security, the flexibility and lower costs of renting are more valuable for most people today.

Practice task: Group tour or independent travel

Some people prefer to travel on an organised group tour, while others prefer to plan their own trip. Which is better for most people: a group tour or independent travel? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.

When people go on holiday, some choose to join an organised tour, while others plan every part of the journey themselves. In my opinion, independent travel is better for most people, because it is more flexible and gives a more authentic experience, even though group tours can be convenient.

To begin with, travelling independently gives people the freedom to follow their own interests. Tour groups usually follow a fixed timetable, and the guide decides how long everyone stays at each place. A traveller on his own, on the other hand, can spend a whole morning in a museum he loves or skip a famous sight that bores him. For example, a visitor who enjoys food can spend an afternoon in a local market instead of rushing to the next monument. As a result, independent travellers use their time and money on the things they enjoy most.

Furthermore, planning a trip alone leads to a more authentic experience of a place. Tour buses usually stop at the same crowded sights and at restaurants that are made for tourists. For instance, a traveller who takes local trains and eats in small family cafés will meet local people and learn about their daily lives, which a short stop with a group rarely allows. Therefore, these travellers return home with a deeper understanding of the culture and more interesting memories.

In conclusion, I believe that independent travel is better for most people, because it offers freedom and a more authentic experience. Although group tours can save time and effort, the flexibility and cultural knowledge gained from planning your own trip are more valuable.
